🦌 Skansen

Skansen is the oldest open-air-museum in the world and to many Swedes a national treasure.

Located on the small inner city island of Djurgården a trip to Skansen is as close as you’ll likely get to a real life time-machine experience, here you’ll discover the living history of Swedens unique past.

During the 19th century Sweden like much of Europe was going through incredible change. Artur Hazelius was concerned that this past would soon be forgotten. And so with the Kings backing he sought out to preserve history by bringing over 150 homes, farms and other unique buildings from parts of the country and then re-assembling them. Along with the architecture of the time you’ll also see animals that are native to Scandinavia.

Today you can witness customs, traditions, the way people would have worked and lived as well as take part in lively traditions such as Midsummer, Walpurgis Night, Lucia and of course the Christmas market.

The museum is found on the island of Djurgården and is also within very easy walking distance of Sweden's oldest and arguably best amusement park of Gröna Lund
